The deep, dark waters of Subnautica 2 are getting a whole lot closer, thanks to the latest patch that introduces some exciting new features aimed at deepening the co-op experience. While the developers at Unknown Worlds keep the massive vision of a new region and story on the horizon, this recent update focuses on refining how players interact with their companions, delivering a feature they are calling the Buddy System.

At the heart of the update is a sophisticated new communication system. Players can now engage in proximity chat, allowing them to talk locally with each other. As the distance increases, the voice subtly shifts, evolving into a radio-sounding voice that progressively breaks up, adding a palpable layer of tension and realism to their underwater conversations.

Beyond communication, the update introduces essential tools for navigation and survival. A new tracking tag functions as a short-range beacon, which can even be cleverly placed inside containers to pinpoint your friends’ locations. This is complemented by player revives: if a friend succumbs to dangers like running out of oxygen or being downed by a shark, a timer activates, allowing players to swim out, share oxygen, and bring their companion back to life, offering a crucial lifeline in the abyss.

The evolution of the player experience isn’t limited to mechanics; there are also fresh cosmetic options available through a new emote menu and additional ways to customize your character, adding another layer of personal expression to the exploration.

While the focus on multiplayer mechanics has sparked discussion among solo players who have enjoyed the original single-player experience, the creative team is committed to balancing the immediate experience with the future scope. Creative director Anthony Gallegos assures the community that while the current patch enhances the co-op experience, the major developments—including the expansive new region, story, and new vehicles—are still firmly on the way.

The promise remains clear: the foundation has been strengthened, and the deep, mysterious world of Subnautica 2 is evolving into an even more dynamic and interconnected adventure for all who dive into the deep.
