The world of gaming is constantly chasing smoother visuals, and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology is the key to unlocking truly fluid gameplay. While console giants like Xbox and PlayStation have long embraced this innovation, Nintendo has recently delivered a significant update for its Switch 2 family of systems, bringing this advanced feature to the table.

Nintendo has rolled out system software version 23.0.0 to the Nintendo Switch 2, and the centerpiece of this update is the expanded support for Variable Refresh Rate, specifically for the docked mode. This technology is designed to combat judder and smooth out frustrating frame-rate fluctuations, ensuring a more visually coherent experience.

Previously, VRR support was limited to the handheld mode, where it effectively synchronized the display refresh rate directly with the game’s frame rate. This provided a noticeable improvement in smoothness for players on the go.

Now, the innovation is expanding. The latest update allows VRR to be engaged when the system is docked, connecting to compatible displays such as televisions or monitors. This moves the fidelity boost from portable play into the big-screen experience.

However, this expanded capability operates under a specific condition. The feature seems to operate on a whitelist, meaning only titles that developers have specifically flagged as supporting docked VRR will activate this advanced setting.

Currently, this selective support is limited. As of this update, only a single title—the introductory Switch 2 Welcome Tour application from Nintendo—is available to demonstrate this new TV VRR capability.
