The Visual Vendetta: Choosing Kennen, Akali, and Jayce

Riftbound’s newest expansion set, Vendetta, isn’t just packed with new cards; it introduces a groundbreaking feature that is reshaping deckbuilding: Champion Legends with opposing domains. This debut allows players to experiment with card combinations that clash—mashing two colors of cards with fundamentally at-odds core ideals.

This focus on contrasting mechanics immediately injects fresh opportunities into the game. Designers wanted to explore how these distinct energy systems could be harnessed through powerful, yet challenging, synergies. Speaking with Riftbound senior designer Jon Moormann, we get a glimpse into the logic behind some of the most anticipated champion combinations.

Consider Akali, who embodies the duality of Red (Fury) and Green (Calm). Her card introduces the concept of being Empowered, a new keyword that allows players to activate extra abilities or effects for a cost. This mechanic ties into her playstyle, rewarding burst damage and tactical retreats, mirroring her signature movement pattern.

Similarly, Jayce represents Body (Orange) and Mind (Blue). This pairing focuses on the mechanical layering of gear and unit readiness. The challenge here lies in making these two domains cooperate effectively, pushing players to think about investment and combos beyond simple resource management.

Perhaps the most complex and intriguing combination is Kennen, the Heart of the Tempest, who blends Yellow (Order) and Purple (Chaos). This pairing was perhaps the hardest to land, as the contrasting mechanics don’t always align perfectly with the champion’s narrative. Moormann noted that exploring Order and Chaos presented unique mechanical challenges that demanded new solutions.

To facilitate these complex interactions, Vendetta also introduced powerful new mechanics like Flow, which allows players to play cards from their trash for a cost before banishing them, and Burn, which manages card flow from the main deck. These systems interact with the Champion Legends abilities, demanding innovative strategies.

Kennen’s combination ties directly into these systems through states like Disempowered, showing how even opposing domains can create tricky opportunities for card advantage and system manipulation. This depth confirms that while thematic fitting takes careful design, the mechanical space between these dual domains is vast.

Vendetta solidifies a new standard for Riftbound, releasing with over 160 cards, 50 Showcase cards, and nine Champion Legends. It marks an exciting evolution in how players can create deeply synergistic decks based on contrasting forces.
