TLOU2 Multiplayer Mod Cancelled at Sony’s Request
The dream of a dedicated PvP multiplayer experience for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has hit an unexpected roadblock, as a popular community mod has been asked to halt its development following contact with Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The mod, which had been under development since January, was scheduled for release this month. However, the project has been shelved, with the mod creator expressing disappointment but also a desire to continue exploring new creative avenues.
The change came when the modder, Speclizer, received a request from Sony Interactive Entertainment asking the project not to be released to the public. While this news is undoubtedly disappointing to fans eager for more interaction within the world of TLOU2, the creator hopes to channel their passion into future projects.
Speclizer had previously shared gameplay footage of the mod in June, giving a glimpse into the ambitious vision. The development process had involved community support, including payment components via Patreon, which aimed to fund the ongoing work, though it ultimately did not prevent the project from being redirected.
This development occurs against a backdrop that brings into sharp focus the recent decisions made by Naughty Dog. The studio had previously cancelled its own official multiplayer project set in the TLOU universe in late 2023, a move that has left many fans reflecting on the direction of the franchise.
The cancellation prompted discussion among those familiar with the game’s history. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida, who had played The Last of Us Online, noted that the original multiplayer experience was exceptional.
Similarly, director Vinit Agarwal, who helmed The Last of Us Online, has received continued praise from former colleagues who have called it one of the best multiplayer games they have ever played.
