For some gamers, the legend of Turok is etched into their memory as a foundational experience—a classic first-person shooter alternative to the epic scope of GoldenEye. But for a newer generation, Turok might be a name they’ve never heard of. The challenge for developer Saber is not just reviving a beloved IP, but successfully bridging that generational gap and sparking interest in the upcoming Turok: Origins.

To capture the attention of today’s audience, Saber has focused on one core principle: co-op. Development chief Tim Willits explained that playing with friends is immensely important for younger gamers, and they have built co-op into the DNA of the new title to ensure broad appeal.

“It’s been a balancing act,” Willits noted, “to ensure we included enough elements to satisfy long-time fans, like the Cerebral [Bore] gun and some throwbacks to the original Turok player, alongside fresh elements. We want players to feel, ‘Oh, this is cool,’ and have dinosaur bosses that are just awesome.”

The goal extends beyond pleasing veterans. Saber aims to attract players who have never played a Turok game at all. As Willits put it, the team wants to build something that looks stunning, plays brilliantly, and is accessible to newcomers. “That’s been our guiding principle,” he added, “to build a game that attracts new players just as much as it keeps the old ones happy.”

This focus on social interaction mirrors a massive shift across the entire video game industry. While single-player experiences remain popular, hangout games have generated billions, proving that social connection is a powerful motivator. Battle royales like PUBG and Fortnite thrived on groups chatting while playing, and extraction shooters like Escape from Tarkov similarly benefited from collaborative play.

The appeal of playing together is now mainstream, leading to the rise of ‘friendslop’ games. Titles like Wardogs, which focuses entirely on collaborative shooting, demonstrate this trend perfectly. Developers are finding that imposing constraints on players diminishes the fun; instead, allowing players to ‘run wild’ makes the experience more engaging.

Turok: Origins taps into this desire for shared experience by offering a unique team-based adventure. Instead of solo action, players can team up to face down dinosaur bosses, creating a dynamic, shared challenge. Imagine a spectacle where teams of three converge to shoot colossal dinosaurs with lasers—a blend of epic scale and cooperative fun.

Willits emphasized that the social element is crucial for attracting a new audience. “Young people use video games as a social connection more so than older generations,” he observed. By incorporating team play and fantastic boss battles, Saber believes they are providing the elements necessary to hook new players into the world of Turok.

The game promises stunning visuals and engaging gameplay, featuring powerful Echoes to unlock new Turok abilities and unforgettable boss encounters. With the release slated for Spring 2027 across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and the Nintendo Switch 2, Turok: Origins is set to prove that a classic franchise can evolve into a compelling, modern social experience.
