Ubisoft hits the brakes on Assassin’s Creed remakes
The Assassin’s Creed franchise continues to evolve, but behind the usual cycle of massive remakes and sequels, the developers are currently steering the ship in a decidedly different direction. Recent updates from Ubisoft have provided clarity regarding the franchise’s future, signaling that while the appetite for a remake is certainly there, the focus is squarely on crafting the next generation of Assassin’s Creed experiences.
Ubisoft has firmly stated that there are currently no other Assassin’s Creed remakes in active development. Instead of rushing new remakes, the studio is concentrating its energy on the next chapter of the franchise, focusing on new settings and compelling narratives that will define the future of the series.
However, that doesn’t mean the franchise is resting. Ubisoft is committed to “exploring opportunities” to revisit older titles. This commitment is already manifesting in two fascinating, upcoming projects. First is Codename Hexe, a darker Assassin’s Creed experience that is reportedly making good progress. Fans can expect an update on this ambitious title in 2027, promising a unique vision at its core.
The second major project, Codename Invictus, is taking shape behind the scenes. This is slated to be a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game. Importantly, the development team has been actively refining the concept based on player feedback. The goal is to ensure that the game delivers on the foundational pillars of the Assassin’s Creed identity while successfully embracing its multiplayer ambitions.
In the meantime, players of existing titles are already receiving exciting enhancements. For players of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a final major update is available, loading the game with New Game Plus, Nightmare Mode, new rewards, finishers, trinkets, and expanded customization options.
The excitement extends to the Viking saga as well. For those immersed in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, a New Game Plus mode is arriving on November 5th. This update isn’t just about replayability; it introduces an optional progression mode where Gear, Runes, and Masteries all contribute to Eivor’s overall power ranking. Players can also earn new gear and a highly coveted Master Assassin outfit inspired by Naoe from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Furthermore, a new Mithril resource has been added, allowing players to upgrade their gear to a new “Divine” level.
This news about ongoing development and updated content comes at a time when Ubisoft is undergoing significant restructuring. The company’s recent changes have resulted in the cancellation of several games, the shutdown of studios, and layoffs, including major cuts at studios like the one behind Skull & Bones and the trials developer RedLynx. While the future of Assassin’s Creed remains bright, these corporate shifts highlight the complex landscape within the publisher as it navigates creative and business challenges.
