As a hardware reviewer, I’ve spent years bouncing between the absolute top-tier CPUs and graphics cards, giving me an intimate, high-level view of what gaming performance really means. This experience has led me to a simple, yet often counterintuitive, conclusion: chasing the absolute maximum settings in modern games is often a fool’s errand.

The marketing narrative tells us that Ultra settings deliver the ultimate visual experience. But the reality, after extensive testing, is that many games don’t actually require those maximum settings to look good, let alone to be playable. The latest upscaling technologies, coupled with smart frame generation, are incredibly effective at emulating higher resolutions, making the difference between Ultra and High settings far less noticeable than the performance cost.

To settle the debate, I ran a series of experiments. I systematically turned down the graphical settings in several visually stunning titles to measure the true performance impact. The results were clear: performance improved dramatically, and the resulting smoother frame rates were more than worth the minimal visual sacrifice.

My setup is powerful—featuring an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D and an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX. While this hardware is more than capable of running almost anything at ultra settings, it doesn’t inherently design itself around the most demanding ray tracing features. That’s where upscaling technologies like FSR step in, providing a brilliant bridge between visual fidelity and performance.

Taking a look at Cyberpunk 2077, the game that sets a visual benchmark, the difference became apparent. Enabling full Ray Tracing and Path Tracing resulted in a stuttering 20 frames per second at 4K—an incredible visual spectacle that was completely unplayable. However, switching to balanced upscaling, paired with the inherent visual quality of the game, delivered an experience that was just as stunning, with significantly smoother performance.

Similarly, in Alan Wake 2, pushing settings to the maximum rendered the world gorgeous but crushed performance to a state of unplayability. By leveraging upscaling and dialing back the visual demands slightly, I achieved perfectly playable frame rates while maintaining an equally immersive and atmospheric experience. For games centered on shadow and mood, this shift delivers huge performance gains without a noticeable downgrade in immersion.

Even in immersive titles like Hogwarts Legacy, the argument holds. The game looks phenomenal across the board, and the extra performance gained by avoiding heavy ray tracing, or utilizing balanced upscaling, results in a smoother, more comfortable experience. The visual leap gained by chasing the absolute highest setting is often purely for marketing, designed to keep us dreaming.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to achieve perfect, photorealistic screenshots for a marketing campaign. The true win is finding the sweet spot where performance is smooth, the experience is deeply immersive, and you aren’t constantly chasing a performance phantom. When you prioritize smooth gameplay over marginal pixel perfection, you unlock genuine gaming enjoyment.
