Uncharted Designer refuses Drake’s Fortune remake
In the world of gaming, sometimes the question isn’t just about graphics or gameplay mechanics—it’s about legacy. For some studios, rehashing beloved classics carries a heavy burden. This is the sentiment expressed by Benson Russell, a designer who helped shape iconic titles like Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and is currently developing games at Naughty Dog.
While speculation has mounted over the years regarding whether Naughty Dog might revisit their history with a remake of Drake’s Fortune, Russell has weighed in, offering a surprisingly pragmatic perspective on the idea.
He argues that remaking games from the past often misses the mark. “Uncharted as a thing is still in the zeitgeist,” Russell explained. He noted that for something to warrant a remake, it usually needs significant updates or fixes. If an original game suffered from poor controls or limited accessibility, a remake makes sense. However, he questioned why they would bother with titles that are already widely experienced by players.
Russell pointed out the fundamental challenge of reinvention: “You’d have to rewrite the whole story to make it better, which means you’re going to change the spirit and you’re going to change the scenes and what the first one was about, right?” He added that altering key set pieces would require justifying why they should be changed if they don’t fit the new vision.
Ultimately, he concluded that trying to remake a foundational game risks turning it into something more superficial than necessary. For Russell, re-imagining a masterpiece might feel more like a cash grab than an essential creative act. He offered a straightforward philosophy: “Just don’t recreate the first game. It’s just, eh.”
While discussions about revisiting older hits continue, Naughty Dog seems to have its focus firmly set on future projects. All current development energy is channeled into their next big title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This project currently sees key figures like boss Neil Druckmann stepping away from his involvement in the ongoing The Last of Us series to dedicate more time to game development.
Despite this focus on the present, whispers of future installments are also circulating within the gaming community. Rumors of a potential The Last of Us 3 game have begun to swirl, keeping fans eagerly anticipating what might come next from the critically acclaimed series.
