Unleash three new heroes in Scott Pilgrim EX Back in the Band
When bringing the full roster of the Sex Bob-omb lineup back into the fray for Scott Pilgrim EX – Back in Band, the challenge wasn’t just about adding new gameplay; it was about breathing life into three beloved newcomers. Stephen Stills, Kim Pine, and Knives Chau needed to feel instantly authentic, melding seamlessly into the world of the game both mechanically and visually.
At Tribute Games, the animation process goes far beyond simply moving sprites from point A to point B. For the animation team, every pose, transition, and tiny reaction is a deliberate opportunity to communicate a character’s personality. These subtle details, often invisible at first glance, are the secret ingredients that make a character feel truly alive.
The first hurdle was updating the Character Select screen to welcome these three additions. Artist Artem Samoilov, among the contributing 2D Animators at Tribute Games, focused on overall composition, ensuring the expanded cast felt balanced while naturally drawing player attention to the new faces. He championed a philosophy where every selection animation functioned as a tiny performance.
“Each selection animation was designed as a tiny performance,” explained Artem Samoilov.
This meticulous attention to detail is the hallmark of the team. Rather than just depicting movement, they sought to inject emotion and humanity into every action. Sometimes this translates into a quick facial expression or a subtle secondary motion—details that might seem fleeting but collectively give the characters profound depth and heart.
The concept phase heavily relied on early sketches to establish the silhouette, posture, and personality of each character before refinement into the final pixel art. Small adjustments to a stance or expression, born from this iterative process, dramatically improved readability while staying true to Bryan Lee O’Malley’s iconic vision.
The design work for Knives Chau, in particular, was an exciting endeavor. As one of the most dynamic additions, she brought a completely different rhythm to combat. Designed to be a fast hit-and-run fighter, Knives thrives on speed, mobility, and relentless pressure. Her unique design incorporates her scarf not just as a stylish visual element, but as a weapon that extends her reach, emphasizing her acrobatic movement and ability to quickly weave through enemies before darting away.
This approach—translating character personality directly into gameplay, animation, and every frame seen on screen—ensures that characters like Knives Chau don’t just exist in the game, they engage with it fully. The result is a set of characters brimming with personality, ready to bring the energy of the band back to the action.
