When you embark on a journey into the modern underworld as a newly awakened vampire, you expect a certain level of allure. That’s exactly the kind of atmosphere that sets the stage for Nighthawks, the upcoming Steam RPG. But behind the seductive facade of the undead adventure lies a fascinating behind-the-scenes drama concerning content classification and player visibility.

Despite the game’s mature themes, the developers were caught in a peculiar bind. Just days before launch, Valve decided to slap an “adults only” tag on Nighthawks, which immediately excluded it from general searches and delisted it in certain regions. This decision caused considerable friction among the creative team.

Producer Dave Gilbert expressed his concern, noting that Valve seemed to believe the game was significantly sexier than its actual content warranted. This created a situation where the game’s visibility was severely limited for potential players, despite the actual content being far less explicit than many might assume.

The game’s official description clarifies the mature elements. Nighthawks features strong language and adult situations, along with occasional moments of non-explicit nudity in romance scenes. Crucially, the majority of the mature content is conveyed through text, deliberately avoiding graphic sex scenes or sexual violence.

This distinction is important when comparing it to other mature RPGs. While some games feature explicit visual content, Nighthawks remains notably less explicit than titles known for full-frontal nudity and graphic sex scenes. The content is intentionally layered, focusing more on narrative seduction and comedic romance sequences rather than explicit visuals.

The frustration was palpable among the creators. Writer and designer Richard Cobbett remarked that if players sought the game specifically for its sex appeal, they would be disappointed by the presence of a few comedic romance moments, rather than explicit material.

The debate over what constitutes “adult content” on Steam became a point of contention. However, after intense stress, the age restriction tag was eventually removed. Gilbert concluded that the experience, while stressful, ultimately proved to be a net positive, noting that more people now know about the game than ever before.

The saga of Nighthawks ultimately highlights the complex and often imperfect process of defining what pornography is—or, in this case, what a video game should be classified as. It’s a reminder that balancing artistic vision with platform policies can lead to complicated, yet ultimately resolved, outcomes.
