The gaming world is buzzing with whispers of a potential comeback for a franchise that once defined a generation of open-world action: Watch Dogs: Legion. Reports suggest that Ubisoft is preparing to relaunch the title next year with a revamped Director’s Cut, aiming to reignite interest in the series.

When Legion launched in 2020, the reaction was somewhat tepid. The franchise subsequently entered a period of rest, with little indication that a new entry was forthcoming. However, despite the hiatus, there is now a concerted push to revitalize the series, suggesting that the developers are ready to give the world of Chicago another dynamic spin.

The original game had already made some controversial shifts, notably ditching the traditional single-protagonist focus. Instead, players were immersed in a virtual recreation of post-Brexit London, playing as various archetypes—from builders and hooligans to spies—who could be eliminated during missions. This freedom, while innovative, redefined the core experience of the game.

Interest was further piqued by subsequent content, including DLC that introduced beloved characters like Aiden Pearce and Wrench, alongside an ambitious Assassin’s Creed expansion that attempted to inject fresh energy through a non-canonical crossover.

The future direction of the franchise has been marked by internal shifts. Creative director Clint Hocking abruptly departed Ubisoft earlier this year, amidst the ongoing development of the Assassin’s Creed Hexe project. Hocking noted the immense challenges of leading large teams within the company, a process he described as akin to navigating a construction site—a fitting metaphor for the high-pressure environment of game development.

Despite the changes, the brand remains important to the company’s future. Ubisoft executive Yves Guillemot acknowledged that Watch Dogs is still considered an important brand, even if it hasn’t been placed alongside the company’s other major franchises as a primary focus following recent restructuring. The question remains, however, about the timeline for a new entry.

Meanwhile, other aspects of the franchise remain in limbo. The long-planned Watch Dogs movie project, which wrapped production and underwent reshoots over the last few years, still lacks an official release date, adding another layer of anticipation to the wait for the next installment.
