Even as the price tags on next-generation gaming hardware start looking a little less friendly, some industry heavyweights are remaining firmly grounded. CD Projekt joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski, for instance, insists that the future of consoles is less about volatile market speculation and more about the enduring power of great content.

When asked about the current financial headwinds impacting the console sector, Nowakowski offered a surprisingly optimistic take. He firmly believes that consoles remain essential tools for gaming, serving to broaden the audience beyond the hardcore enthusiast and welcoming casual and semi-casual players alike. In his view, having an easy-to-plug-in platform for enjoyment is fundamentally important.

He suggests that the hardware will simply weather the storm, regardless of fluctuations in pricing. This perspective is rooted in a deeper philosophy: the quality of the experience trumps the cost of the machine. As Nowakowski put it, content is the king. If the creative output is compelling, people will always find a way to discover and play it, regardless of whether a new console launch is delayed or expensive.

This stance reflects a cautious realism about the development process itself. While the developers at CD Projekt naturally demand the best tools, Nowakowski acknowledges that they are also realistic. If next-generation hardware timelines shift, some ambitious ideas requiring cutting-edge specifications might be thoughtfully postponed for the future, rather than being rushed into an ill-fitting timeline.

The larger console landscape is currently navigating choppy waters, with major players like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo dealing with significant price hikes driven by global factors, including tariffs and the surging demand for AI-related components and memory. There is growing speculation that the next wave of consoles could see prices climb to $1,000 or more, raising concerns about a potentially dramatic negative effect on the overall gaming market.

Despite these macroeconomic pressures, the development pipeline remains robust. CD Projekt has several massive projects lined up, including the anticipated release of The Witcher 4 in 2028, alongside ongoing work on titles like Cyberpunk 2. This ongoing commitment to high-quality gaming suggests that the foundation—the console experience—will continue to be a vital platform for creative endeavors for years to come.
