Wolverine Dev denies GenAI use after strange in-game sign
The world of video game development is buzzing with speculation about the role of artificial intelligence, but recent attention focused on Marvel’s Wolverine led to a fascinating discussion about what’s real and what’s simply a glitch.
Fans recently spotted something peculiar in the game’s bathroom sign, sparking immediate online theories that the visual anomaly was the result of generative AI. The question was simple: was Insomniac Games leveraging machine learning to create their assets?
However, when pressed for clarification, the developers offered a technical explanation rather than a philosophical answer. James Stevenson, the community and marketing director at Insomniac, firmly dismissed the idea of AI being involved.
“There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine,” Stevenson stated, confirming that the strange image was not the result of artificial intelligence but rather a technical error. He attributed the odd appearance to a simple “UV map bug,” which the development team is currently working to fix.
This incident highlights a critical distinction in the gaming industry. While some studios are exploring the use of machine learning to accelerate development—as seen in titles like Spider-Man 2—the developers remain committed to using human creativity for their core content.
The narrative of AI in gaming is growing rapidly. Other major companies are already integrating generative AI tools into their pipelines. For instance, Activision’s Call of Duty series utilizes generative AI, and Sega is preparing to use it for their upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour.
Despite the industry-wide exploration of AI tools, Insomniac has drawn a clear line for their own projects. This approach allows them to harness the benefits of technology without compromising the integrity of their creative process.
In the meantime, Marvel’s Wolverine itself has proven to be a commercial success. Released on September 15, the game quickly amassed popularity, reportedly exceeding the lifetime sales of Death Stranding 2 on the PS5 right out of the gate.
Critics have also weighed in on the experience. GameSpot reviewed the title, awarding it an 8/10. Reviewer Tamoor Hussain noted that while the game is entertaining, it settles into a more forgettable experience that will provide enjoyment for a limited time.
