The world of Marvel’s Wolverine has sparked a lively debate, largely centered on whether the game is letting players truly roam or if it’s still clinging to its overbearing guardrails. For some players, the experience was a tight, story-critical journey; for others, elements like the infamous Scent Trails felt more like frustrating on-rails directives.

The most vocal discussion online revolved around the game’s design choices—specifically the quick-time events and on-rails motorcycle sections that some felt limited player freedom. But perhaps the most polarizing feature was the Scent Trails, those glowing breadcrumb paths that seemed to dictate every move, stripping away the joy of exploration in favor of predetermined objectives.

Insomniac Games has listened, and with a recent update, they have introduced toggles, giving players more control over these controversial elements. The studio recognized that while certain visual cues were important for the narrative, players wanted agency over the experience.

Now, players can choose whether to engage with the game’s deeper secrets. There is an on/off option for the Scent Trails, allowing players to toggle visibility for the Whisky Bottle collectibles. Furthermore, a new toggle controls the Nightmare Door Roots, which function like standard trails but lead toward metaphysical rooms supposedly holding Logan’s suppressed trauma. Players can now decide if they want to uncover these darker, more esoteric paths.

Insomniac confirms that while these options provide freedom, the core narrative elements remain. The main, permanent blue trail pointing to the next objective is still active, ensuring that the main path remains clearly visible. This was a point of reassurance, especially considering that the game has already adjusted the intensity of the scent trails in a previous update.

James Stevenson, the community and marketing director at Insomniac, emphasized the developer’s commitment to the player base, stating that the team will continue to listen to feedback and work with the community to address requests. It seems the journey for Logan is far from over, and the smell-related updates are only the beginning.

Beyond the visual tweaks, the patch also addressed technical hiccups, resolving various bugs and crashes. For instance, players will no longer encounter objects randomly turning all-white after extended play sessions, making the overall experience smoother and more reliable.
