WOTC calls MTG Reality Fracture Deck among the most powerful
Dive into the multiverse with Magic: The Gathering‘s Reality Fracture set, a collection that throws iconic characters from the game’s past into exhilarating alternate realities. It’s a visual feast, but beyond the spectacle of alternate legends, the set sparked a fascinating discussion among players and designers about the logistics of releasing such massive card volumes.
While the sheer volume of fantastic cards in Reality Fracture made for an incredible release, Wizards of the Coast made a strategic choice regarding the Commander format. Despite the abundance of material, the team opted to release only a single preconstructed deck for Commander players, mirroring the decision made for the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set.
This choice wasn’t arbitrary; it came down to a practical problem. As Game Designer Gavin Verhey explained, releasing two distinct Commander decks often leads to one immediately dominating the market while the other disappears into obscurity. Verhey noted that it was difficult to imagine one deck that would be significantly cooler than the Jace Echoverse deck.
So, the team decided on a focused approach. Instead of trying to manage two separate, potentially conflicting precon offerings, they concentrated their design efforts into one powerhouse deck. This single creation, Multiverse Reforged, was packed with alternate versions of legendary creatures, including concepts like the Ur-Sphinx, alongside the formidable Planeswalker Jace himself.
Despite the temptation to treat the deck merely as a toolkit, Verhey confirmed that the team views Multiverse Reforged as a true powerhouse right out of the box. The splashy theme, combined with the abundance of individually cool legends, lends itself perfectly to diverse playstyles, offering players endless avenues for building unique strategies.
It’s clear that the concept of alternate realities, when channeled into a single cohesive package, delivers immense power. Reality Fracture proves that focusing on a theme can lead to incredible results, proving that sometimes, less is truly more when crafting a legendary experience.
