X-Men actor calls D23 casting a nightmare because people didn’t know him
When casting a blockbuster, the reveal can be a rollercoaster, and for some stars, it feels more like a delightful, yet slightly unsettling, trip down a bizarre dream. Christopher Abbott recently shared his experience navigating the X-Men casting announcements at D23, describing the moment as less of a triumph and more of a bewildering experience.
Abbott recounted that he started the event walking out with enthusiasm, only to have his energy instantly shift when he realized the audience didn’t seem to recognize him. “I think I started walking out pretty enthusiastically, and then I kind of felt like a lot of people there didn’t know who I was, so then my energy shifted within the split second,” he shared. This moment, he noted, was a unique mix of anticipation and confusion—a little bit of a dream and a little bit of a nightmare.
Despite the momentary disorientation, Abbott remained grounded, deciding to simply walk out and nod. “I was like, ‘I’m just going to walk out and nod,'” he mused. This shift in perspective led to a more humble appreciation of the process.
Abbott is set to step into the role of a much younger Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming MCU X-Men film, a role that places him in a new, dynamic facet of the franchise. His journey to this part of the cinematic landscape is interesting, given his background. While he is perhaps best known for his work on the hit HBO series Girls, his resume is packed with diverse projects, including the Wolfman remake alongside Julia Garner, the critically acclaimed Poor Things, and his work in films like Kraven the Hunter.
The lineup of the X-Men crew is already generating buzz, featuring a fantastic ensemble of talent. The cast includes Maya Boyd as the powerful Storm, Asa Germann as Angel, and Adam Driver taking on the mantle of Mister Sinister. Adding further depth to the team is Samara Weaving, who will portray Emma Frost, and Sadie Sink, who makes her debut as Jean Grey in the related Spider-Man universe film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
With these exciting roles confirmed, anticipation is building for the X-Men saga, which is slated to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. It looks like the next chapter in the mutant story is set to be as compelling as it is confusing for those involved in the casting process.
