Unlock Your Library: How to Turn Physical Games into Digital Assets on Xbox

Tired of juggling physical discs while enjoying your vast collection? Microsoft has just rolled out a brilliant new feature that bridges the gap between your physical game collection and your digital library: the Xbox disc-to-digital program is officially available for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X users.

This program is designed to give you the flexibility to receive digital licenses for a selection of your physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games. It’s a straightforward way to expand your access to games, making your physical collection work a little harder for you.

So, how do you claim these licenses? The process is surprisingly simple. To claim a digital license for a supported title, simply insert the game disc into your Xbox console while you are signed in. A notification will pop up, confirming that you have successfully received the license.

The beauty of this system is its flexibility. You can use this feature across both Xbox Series X and Xbox One consoles, even if you are primarily focused on digital gaming. It’s a true upgrade for any gamer looking to maximize their hardware.

While the disc automatically starts the installation when inserted, you have control over this process. If you prefer to manage your library in bulk, you can easily disable the automatic installation feature. Simply navigate to the Profile & system section in your settings, then look under Devices & connections. There, you will find an option for Disc where you can uncheck the setting for “Play disc automatically.”

Disabling this setting grants you more control. When you opt out of auto-install, you gain the ability to claim licenses in bulk. You can insert discs sequentially, manually select the game card on the home screen, use the Menu button to select the game, and claim the digital license. Once that’s done, you just eject the disc and move on to the next one.

Once you are finished claiming your licenses, remember to switch the “Play disc automatically” option back on so that your future physical games can start installing seamlessly.

It is worth noting that while this feature is powerful, not all publishers are yet participating. Major companies like Square Enix and Ubisoft, for instance, do not appear to support the program yet. This means that while the feature is fantastic, it may not be available for every title, limiting its use for those who aim to fully digitize every single game in their collection.

Finally, the program doesn’t restrict lending. If you decide to lend a physical game to a friend, they will receive the digital license. When they return the disc, you simply re-insert the game, and the license is returned to your account, making the whole system a truly flexible solution for the modern gamer.
