Xbox’s dramatic restructuring and reset
The gaming world is currently experiencing a significant shakeup at Xbox, marked by sweeping internal changes designed to redefine how its major franchises operate. Following earlier layoffs, the company initiated a broader “reset” intended to address structural issues within its gaming unit.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma addressed the reasons behind the restructuring, pointing to a core operational challenge: the independent nature of various teams, studios, and functions. Sharma noted that this independence, while fostering creativity, often made it difficult for these groups to align toward a unified, shared goal.
In response to this, the company has announced a radical restructuring of its internal studios. This move signals a deliberate effort to reduce operational silos and foster greater collaboration among the teams responsible for some of gaming’s biggest franchises.
Perhaps the most high-profile change involves the legacy of the Halo franchise. The restructuring includes a significant shift in ownership, placing the Halo Studios—formerly 343 Industries, responsible for titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved—under the management of Activision, the maker of the highly successful Call of Duty series.
While the change involves a corporate realignment, Microsoft assured the community that the goal remains focused on the legacy of the Halo universe. The Halo Studios team will continue to operate as a dedicated, small group focused on delivering an exceptional experience for the player community.
Activision President Rob Kostich emphasized the ambition behind this partnership. He stated that the objective is clear: to create the greatest Halo game ever, honoring its history while building a powerful future. Kostich confirmed that a purpose-built team, assembled with unique capabilities and talent, is already in place to deliver this next chapter.
This strategic move suggests a pivot from independent studio operations to a more unified, collaborative approach, aiming to maximize the potential of major gaming intellectual property across the industry. The restructuring signals a focus on shared objectives, promising a new era for the franchises involved.
