Yoshi-P would redesign MMOs if he made another one
The journey of Final Fantasy XIV has been nothing short of a triumph, built on the foundation laid by its director, Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida. Now, as the studio gears up for the next major expansion, Evercold promises further evolution. But beyond the immediate goals of content creation, Yoshida’s mind is clearly operating on a grander scale, sparking intriguing speculation about what his next creative move might look like.
In a recent interview, Yoshida offered insight into his philosophy for guiding FFXIV through its ongoing development. He explained that for the current expansion, he consciously steered the game toward ‘change,’ aiming to enhance player enjoyment and make the overall experience more comfortable and aligned with modern lifestyles.
This pursuit of evolution isn’t without complexity. Managing such significant changes within a live service MMO requires careful navigation. As Yoshida noted, making sharp turns quickly can be risky, much like driving fast: “Making sudden changes to try and keep up with that pace can be harmful to our operations, like how making sharp turns while driving fast tends to lead to accidents.” He emphasized that overseeing FFXIV involves making constant, high-stakes judgment calls.
Yet, this cautious approach doesn’t preclude grander ambitions. When asked about starting entirely fresh, Yoshida revealed a fascinating ambition: if he were to develop an entirely new online live service title from scratch, he would challenge himself to tackle completely new game designs and values.
This admission shifts the conversation from managing an existing masterpiece to imagining a blank canvas. It prompts us to consider what kind of vision Yoshida might bring to a project where he is not bound by the legacy of FFXIV, exploring entirely different mechanics and experiences.
While it’s important to remember that this remains speculation—given Yoshida’s long-term commitment to his beloved franchise, many hope for continued evolution within the existing universe. However, the notion that he might eventually step outside the familiar boundaries of Final Fantasy to craft something entirely new is a compelling thought for any fan of game design.
