Aang director says leaks won’t harm TLA movie legacy

The world of animated television and film often thrives on anticipation, but lately, that carefully built suspense has been put through a very real test—a sudden, unavoidable exposure. As the crew behind Avatar: The Last Airbender navigated the choppy waters of leaks, director Lauren Montgomery offered a surprisingly optimistic take on the fallout.

“Under the circumstances of everything that happened, it is bittersweet,” Montgomery admitted recently at San Diego Comic-Con. “But I’m excited that we get to share it sooner than later.”

The leaks, which allegedly included non-watermarked versions of the entire movie circulating on social media months ahead of schedule, certainly shifted the timeline for fans hoping to wait until near Halloween for a premiere. This development forced Paramount to adjust plans, shifting the streaming release of Avatar: The Last Airbender to July 25th.

Rather than seeing this as a setback, Montgomery framed the change as an opportunity for immediate connection. She suggested that waiting until October would have been less beneficial than sharing the work now, especially given the massive audience and excitement surrounding the project.

“Everything else, they’re just situations that are out of our control,” she explained. “You can mourn it a little bit, but in the long run you have to believe in what you’ve made – and know that this is a short moment in time. The movie is going to live much longer than that. We’re happy it’s going to be out there now.”

Beyond the release timing, the excitement surrounding the franchise continues to build. At San Diego Comic-Con, the team also confirmed exciting future developments for the world of Avatar.

In addition to discussing the movie, the cast and creators unveiled plans for a new television series, marking a significant step in expanding the lore. Furthermore, details were shared regarding sequels and spin-offs that promise even more adventures for the characters.

The follow-up to the Legend of Korra story, Seven Havens, has been officially set for an October 9th release date. Meanwhile, there is also news confirming that a “secret” television show is currently in development, hinting at rich new material waiting to be explored across the Avatar universe.
