Arc Raiders tests new PvE mode soon

Embark Studios is putting the player economy to the ultimate test with an ambitious experiment for Arc Raiders. Next month, from October 13 to October 20, players will get a toggle switch, allowing them to seamlessly shift between competitive PvP lobbies and PvE environments where they can safely disengage from combat.

This isn’t just a simple game setting; it’s a deep dive into how players prefer to experience conflict. The goal of this temporary mode is to measure how players react when the high-stakes dynamic of PvP is removed, providing valuable data on the balance between tension and enjoyment.

During this period, the loot system will also undergo adjustment. Because the PvE mode inherently carries lower stakes, the value of loot obtained in these settings will be reduced, reflecting the shift in gameplay priorities.

The design behind this experiment is rooted in player behavior. Embark Studios noted that data collected from the player base suggested a clear preference: players were more interested in cooperative and social experiences than engaging in direct hostile combat with other human players.

The metrics paint a compelling picture. The data revealed that a significant portion of the player base actively sought alternatives to PvP. For instance, 37% of players identified as friendly co-op players, and over 70% of friendly players expressed a desire for fewer hostile encounters.

Furthermore, the numbers indicated a clear desire for change, with 51% of the surveyed player base expressing interest in a dedicated PvE option within the game. While 34% remained dedicated PvP players, the overall trend pointed toward a desire for diversified gameplay.

The tension is still part of the design. While the toggle offers a break from PvP, the antagonists remain active. ARCs will continue to target downed players, creating an underlying sense of peril, but still ignore players who choose to stand still, forcing players to manage both cooperative and hostile threats.

Embark Studios admitted that this was not a risk-free test. They acknowledged the inherent tension in the game’s original design, reflecting on the difficulty of altering a system built with a specific vision. However, they argued that respecting player data is essential, noting that while they designed a vision, the true nature of the game emerges when players find their own ways to enjoy it.

The result of this trial will provide crucial, actionable feedback. Whether the PvE toggle becomes a permanent feature or not, this experiment offers the community a unique opportunity to show the developers exactly what they want, ensuring that Arc Raiders evolves in a way that satisfies its diverse player base.
