CDPR hints Cyberpunk movie has an original story
The neon-drenched world of Night City is about to step out of the game and onto the big screen, but it won’t be a simple copy-paste. High-level executives from CD Projekt Red are taking a cautious, yet exciting, first step toward bringing the sprawling cyberpunk universe to life, focusing less on a direct translation of the video game and more on crafting a compelling cinematic epic.
Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, recently offered a glimpse into this ambitious project, emphasizing that the goal is not simply to adapt the game’s narrative, but to tell an original story set within the rich world of Cyberpunk. This creative approach signals a commitment to honoring the lore while pushing the boundaries of cinematic storytelling.
This exciting venture came about through strategic partnerships. Following the expiration of a prior content contract, CD Projekt Red forged a deal with Paramount, which is now under the Skydance banner following the Warner Bros. acquisition. This alliance was bolstered by the involvement of live-action Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, bringing significant industry weight and experience to the table.
The decision to pursue a unique narrative framework makes perfect sense, especially considering the franchise’s existing track record. The story of Cyberpunk has already demonstrated its power when explored through media like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, proving that the core themes and character dynamics resonate powerfully with audiences.
This focus on original storytelling is key to maximizing the franchise’s potential. By looking to develop a new cinematic narrative, the teams are poised to explore new angles of the Cyberpunk universe, ensuring the adaptation is a true cinematic experience rather than just a video game remake.
While the vision is taking shape, specific release dates and casting details remain under wraps, as both Paramount and CD Projekt Red are reportedly waiting until they are fully prepared before making any official announcements. This approach suggests patience is part of the strategy.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the Night City saga, anticipating a cinematic vision that captures the grit, complexity, and dazzling spectacle of the world that CD Projekt Red has built.
