CEO flabbergasted by GTA 6 delays
The saga of delay often feels like a frustrating roadblock, but when it involves billion-dollar video games, the friction shifts from player impatience to executive strain. For the leadership behind some of gaming’s biggest franchises, navigating extended development timelines can prove far more challenging than simply waiting.
The frustration reached a head when the timeline for a massive title like GTA 6 shifted multiple times. As the stakes grew, the communication between the publisher and the development team became fraught with tension.
Rockstar’s head of publishing, Jennifer Kolbe, found herself needing to engage the publisher, Strauss Zelnick of Take-Two Interactive, on two separate occasions to discuss the adjustments. The first adjustment pushed the release from Fall 2025 to May 2026. The second required a further delay, pushing the target from May to November 2026.
The pressure, it seems, was palpable. When discussing the second delay, Kolbe reportedly admitted she had to ask, “You’re kidding. Please tell me you’re kidding,” reflecting the sheer difficulty of managing such extended schedules.
Fortunately, the ultimate outcome was one of understanding. Zelnick eventually grasped the realities of the development process, acknowledging the complexities involved. This realization brought a sense of relief, as it underscored the incredible luck that the team had avoided the pitfalls of rushing a major launch, a scenario that many development teams have unfortunately experienced.
Ultimately, the extra time invested in GTA 6 will likely prove to be a small investment compared to the massive payoff. This extended period allowed the teams to refine their craft, setting the stage for future projects, like GTA 7, to be built with even greater speed and precision.
