Coffee Break Joke to Bathtub Rage Game
Every great game begins with a wild, slightly ridiculous idea. For the developers behind Driving Is Hard, the origin story didn’t come from a corporate meeting; it materialized over a lukewarm coffee machine and a shared sense of glorious rage.
Before the current reality of steep off-road hills and hilarious chaos, the team was just a group of friends sketching out dreams. Co-founders like Liudas (Hangeris) and Tautvydas were deep into the indie scene, dreaming of their own studio. It was during one of these casual office loitering sessions that the spark ignited. Amidst the usual half-baked game ideas, a suggestion surfaced: a standalone Foddian racing game. But the idea quickly escalated into something far more absurd: a Foddian game where you controlled the vehicle using only a mouse.
The initial concept, born from a laugh, quickly became a challenge. The dream was tested, and the result was pure, unadulterated frustration. The first prototype, a mouse-controlled racing experience, proved utterly unintuitive and infuriating. The team wisely scrapped the mouse idea, opting instead for more traditional arcade controls, setting the stage for a truly visceral experience.
As the development continued, the focus shifted to visual identity. While Hangeris refined the challenging car handling and tuning, the lead artist had the mission of making the game stop the scroll. A simple off-road buggy felt too plain. The breakthrough came when the team revisited a seemingly random thought: a bathtub on wheels, complete with a semi-nude bald driver. This image, coupled with a desire for a unique visual hook, was the visual alchemy the project needed.
The vision was crystallized. A bathtub on wheels. This concept, described as absolutely awesome, quickly became the centerpiece. It was a mashup of the absurd and the physical, blending the rough, exposed suspension of a buggy with the unexpected humor of a porcelain vessel traversing brutal terrain.
Adding another layer of personality, the protagonist was named Jeff. This decision came from a casual conversation with a fellow developer who suggested it for the most airtight reason possible. The final result was a vehicle piloted by Jeff, navigating treacherous slopes with unforgiving physics, finding his way through emotional turmoil and physical struggle.
What started as a joke sparked a full-blown rage-inducing reality. Driving Is Hard now exists as a challenging, physics-based adventure available on Xbox with Xbox Play Anywhere. Grab the wheel, climb into the tub, and prepare for a journey where every slip and slide tests your patience against the steep, unforgiving hills.
