Confront the Protoss in StarCraft
When the StarCraft reveal trailer dropped, the immediate focus was squarely on the Terrans, setting the stage for a breathtaking confrontation with the Zerg. Yet, the StarCraft universe is far richer than just this conflict. It is a saga built on three foundational factions—the Terrans, the Zerg, and the Protoss—each possessing a unique mystique that defines the franchise.
While the Protoss were largely absent from the initial cinematic reveal, they remain a crucial element of the lore, poised to enter the fray. GameSpot sat down with GM and creative director Dan Hay to delve into the fascinating dynamics of how these three factions will interact, offering some tantalizing insights into the creative vision.
“The answer to that question is I absolutely unequivocally can’t say,” Hay admitted. “But what I can do is tell you what I would want as a player. I’ll hint at sort of not what we’re doing, but some of the things that we think about.”
Hay explained that the goal is not simply a single flavor of conflict. He envisioned a game that balances different thematic experiences: “We want it to not all just be one taste. So we want to have moments where you’re fighting things that are organic, and then moments where you’re fighting things that are this wonderful legacy and that are ancient.”
He elaborated on the distinct feel of each faction: the Protoss carry a sense of “grandness” and “mystique,” the Zerg represent overwhelming, “numberless” organic power, and the Terrans embody a haphazard, industrial approach to sector control. This balance ensures that every encounter will feel unique and deeply resonant.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Hay pointed out a subtle nod to the Protoss in the trailer. When viewers look closely at the background architecture during a specific moment, they can spot structures that are distinctly neither Terran nor Zerg, hinting at the presence of this ancient civilization.
Beyond the lore, the game is also shifting its perspective. Blizzard confirmed that StarCraft will adopt a third-person perspective. This change aims to dramatically impact the gameplay experience, showcasing the scale of conflict in a way that emphasizes the sheer terror—for instance, seeing a Terran soldier look up in sheer dread at the massive form of a Zerg Overlord, a view often restricted in previous StarCraft titles.
Finally, the focus of the reboot is on a deeper, more immersive experience. StarCraft is slated to feature a single-player focus, suggesting that players will engage more deeply with the narrative and the complexity of the universe, promising a story that unfolds at a more intimate pace.
