Dan Houser avoids GTA 6 to protect his new games
Dan Houser, a figure deeply woven into the fabric of the Grand Theft Auto universe, is currently engaging in a calculated creative retreat. As a co-founder of Rockstar Games and a legendary lead writer, Houser is navigating the immense pressure of the industry by deliberately stepping away from the latest blockbuster, GTA 6, seeking a space free from distraction to focus on his next set of ambitious endeavors.
In an interview, Houser explained his rationale: he aims to avoid anything that might disrupt his creative flow. Given his extensive history in open-world game development and his commitment to figuring out innovative marketing strategies, he feels that observing what others are doing would only lead to comparison rather than genuine innovation. Instead, he prefers to dedicate his time to thinking about entirely new ways of doing things.
This pursuit of fresh ideas is the driving force behind his new studio, Absurd Ventures. The company is incubating multiple multi-media projects, signaling a shift toward unique conceptual territory beyond the established formula.
Among these projects are two distinct concepts. One is an open-world comedy designed to lean heavily into humor and character memory, details of which Houser is preparing to share in the coming months. The other is a more cerebral concept: a dystopian science fiction narrative centered on a video game development gone spectacularly wrong, involving a rogue artificial intelligence that has achieved sentience.
Houser views his career as a privilege, reflecting on the success of the teams and the innovative work he has done. Now, his focus is on replicating that success while applying new perspectives and generating fresh intellectual property.
This creative momentum is already visible in his flagship project, Absurdaverse. The studio recently unveiled the cast list for this AAA story-driven open-world game and animated series, featuring recognizable stars from shows like 30 Rock and Billions.
Through Absurd Ventures, Dan Houser is not just creating new games; he is exploring new narrative landscapes, driven by a desire to blend high-concept storytelling with a fresh, often humorous, approach to the medium.
