The excitement surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 is only just beginning to build, but the appetite for true gaming innovation is endless. Recently, a deep dive into the technical capabilities of the new platform provided some fascinating insights into how beloved franchises handle the transition, particularly in the horror genre.

Digital Foundry stepped up to provide a comprehensive technical review for Resident Evil 4 on the Switch 2. But their analysis didn’t stop there; they also shared compelling impressions for the deluxe editions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.

When examining the transition of the critically acclaimed Resident Evil series, some minor adjustments in graphical fidelity are expected. Indeed, the review for Resident Evil 4 highlighted a noticeable “range of downgrades” when compared to the experience on the PlayStation 5. This is not necessarily a cause for alarm, but rather a standard reality when porting complex AAA titles to new hardware.

The adjustments are subtle yet significant, focusing on balancing performance and visual fidelity. For instance, some localized light sources on the Switch 2 do not cast real-time shadows in every scenario. However, this technical trade-off is mitigated by the fact that the shadows that do appear are rendered at a resolution that is at least comparable to the previous generation, ensuring that the atmosphere and mood of the game remain intact.

This balance demonstrates that while hardware evolution brings changes, the core gameplay experience and the masterful atmosphere that define the Resident Evil franchise remain powerfully present. The opportunity for Nintendo and developers moving forward is to leverage the unique strengths of the Switch 2 to enhance immersion, rather than simply replicating previous performance benchmarks.
