Nvidia remains conspicuously silent on the release date for DLSS 5, a technology that sparked significant controversy earlier this year. Yet, in the shadows of corporate silence, a curious experiment has unfolded, allowing PC modders to peek behind the curtain of the neural rendering and expose the spectacular flaws in Nvidia’s AI-powered face filters.

A recent leak provided modders with the ability to inject this experimental neural rendering into almost any game, giving them a unique, unfiltered view of how the technology truly performs. Armed with this access, the RenoDX modding community quickly developed toolsets that allowed them to test the full suite across a variety of titles. The goal? To see exactly how much the AI-powered post-processing could fundamentally alter a game world.

The testing scope was wide, ranging from modern thrillers like Control and Cyberpunk 2077 to classic titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and even Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These tests provided a stark demonstration of the benefits and the many, many drawbacks inherent in heavily relying on AI for graphical enhancement.

The results quickly revealed that while minor blemishes might be smoothed out, they often resulted in incoherence. For example, in Control, toggling the neural rendering made the protagonist Jesse Faden’s character model look more detailed with added facial shadowing. However, this enhancement came at a cost: the resulting look was clearly unnatural, causing the character to stand out even more in motion within an environment that was unevenly enhanced, proving that small details can quickly shatter the overall scene cohesion.

The absurdity became even clearer when examining older games. Nvidia had previously defended DLSS as simply enhancing existing geometry, not fundamentally altering it. This defense crumbles when applied to older classics. Modders found that applying the neural rendering to a PlayStation 2 title like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas> created visibly wrong character and environmental models, highlighting how heavily the AI was interfering with established game structures.

Beyond visual integrity, the technical cost of this neural rendering was also significant. Modders found that using DLSS 5 across various RTX 40- and 50-series cards resulted in a massive performance hit. The local processing required for the AI models to run in real-time often consumed a huge amount of GPU VRAM and sometimes halved frame rates, confirming some of the performance fears raised during the initial reveal.

Nvidia has since introduced DLSS 4.5, which brought the next generation of Ray Reconstruction to improve image quality in supported ray-traced games. While DLSS 5 is anticipated later in 2026, the debate over developer control remains central. Nvidia has stressed that game developers should retain full control over post-processing effects, even as some developers have openly voiced strong opposition to the introduction of the latest, most aggressive AI features.
