The sands of Arrakis are calling, and now, the journey can be taken solo. Developer Funcom is taking its sprawling MMO-survival epic, Dune: Awakening, and offering players a new dimension: a dedicated single-player experience.

This highly requested feature is set to arrive alongside the console release later this month, promising those looking to immerse themselves in the lore and survive the harsh realities of the desert without needing a full team.

But what exactly are players in store for? When asked about the vision for this new mode, chief creative officer Joel Bylos offered a refreshing perspective on expectations. He made it clear that lone wolves should not look for a direct replacement for a story like The Last of Us. Instead, Bylos suggested that if players approach the experience with the correct expectations for a survival game, they will find perfect satisfaction.

This shift highlights the massive technical feat Funcom accomplished. Transforming a persistent, server-authoritative, open-world survival game with multiple maps into a cohesive, smooth local experience is no small feat. It requires careful engineering to bring the epic scope of Arrakis down to a personal scale.

To achieve this, the studio had to make significant changes. The team focused on adapting the core MMO mechanics for a single-player context, which involved rebalancing combat and resource harvest rates. Furthermore, the systems were fine-tuned so that player machines could effectively handle the heavy lifting of the environment, making the solo journey feel grounded and challenging.

By adjusting features like multiplayer elements and resource dynamics, Funcom has successfully created a sandbox where players can experience the rich narrative of Frank Herbert’s novels, allowing them to forge their own destiny on Arrakis. It’s a testament to the team’s ability to take a complex world and distill it into an intensely personal, unforgettable survival adventure.
