FBI Arrests Man Over Fortnite Voice Chat Threats
A serious threat made in the heat of an online game led to an FBI arrest, highlighting the often-unseen dangers lurking within digital voice chat.
Last week, the FBI arrested an Alabama resident following reports made by Epic Games concerning alarming threats made over voice chat in the popular game Fortnite.
The player, who used the username WagesOfNinja, was arrested after the FBI investigated disturbing communications that were shared during voice interactions. The threats reportedly escalated beyond typical in-game frustration, expressing severe intent related to real-world violence and self-harm.
“Let’s see if the FBI is going to show up at my door because I’ll shoot them motherfrs too,” the player reportedly stated before law enforcement intervened. These unsettling comments included suggestions of planning to end his life and even charging at police.
Upon receiving these disclosures, Epic Games initiated a “voluntary emergency disclosure” to the FBI National Threat Operations Section (NTOS) Exigent Threat Research and Analysis Crisis Team (EXTRACT). The developer provided the agency with an audio recording and transcript of the threatening communications for review.
The fallout prompted a significant reflection on how online gaming environments can intersect with real-world safety. In response to the incident, Epic Games announced a new voice reporting system for Fortnite in November 2023, designed to give players more control over their digital spaces.
This updated system allows players to clip audio and anonymously file a report whenever they witness another player violating community rules. When a report is made, the last five minutes of communication are captured and sent to the moderation team for review.
Beyond voice chat, the platform also employs robust safety measures for text communication, storing messages for up to 30 days. Furthermore, the developer utilizes autonomous systems to continuously monitor communications for harmful language, including threats of self-harm, child endangerment, and threats of real-world violence.
This initiative underscores the growing responsibility of platform developers to mitigate risks associated with online interactions, ensuring that virtual spaces remain safer environments for everyone.
