The quest for the coveted Platinum trophy often feels less like an achievement and more like an endurance test. For long-time fans of the Final Fantasy franchise, chasing that ultimate mark of completion can be an epic, sometimes frustrating, journey. But as Square Enix prepares to launch Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, developers are clearly taking lessons from the past to ensure the experience is not only challenging but also rewarding.

The focus is shifting from pure difficulty to genuine enjoyment. Director Naoki Hamaguchi, who oversees the development, has set ambitious expectations for the new title. He anticipates that a significant portion of players, perhaps up to twenty percent or more, will be able to earn the Platinum trophy in Revelation, solidifying its status as the grand finale of the remake trilogy.

This expectation is particularly notable when comparing the franchise’s achievements. In contrast, only 2.3 percent of players who completed Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have managed to earn its Platinum prize, The Planet’s Hope. This difference signals a deliberate evolution in how the developers view player engagement.

The journey to that platinum status in the previous installment was undeniably demanding. Director Teruki Endo, who directed the battle director for Rebirth, openly admitted that the pursuit of that trophy sometimes led to regret. “Oh, no! I feel bad – I have regrets,” Endo shared upon hearing fan feedback regarding the difficulty of the Rebirth Platinum. He acknowledged that the challenge was intentional, but perhaps underestimated the sheer enthusiasm players would bring to the goal.

This experience provided a crucial lesson for the team: the goal shouldn’t be merely to inflict difficulty, but to craft battles that are fundamentally enjoyable. The understanding gained from the previous title was that pushing players too far can lead to frustration rather than satisfaction.

Square Enix has evidently internalized this feedback, aiming to streamline the completionist experience for the upcoming title. Hamaguchi has promised that the Platinum trophy for Revelation will be significantly easier to obtain. Furthermore, the core combat mechanics themselves are expected to be refined, making the battles less brutal and more rewarding.

The aim is clear: to deliver the epic conclusion fans crave while ensuring that the path to victory feels like a genuine triumph, not just a grueling slog. With the release of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation slated for April 8, 2027, players can look forward to a final installment where the pursuit of the ultimate trophy is matched by a superior, more enjoyable experience.
