The world of Pokémon is constantly evolving, and new concepts are always brewing in the background. Recently, Game Freak provided an exclusive interview with Shigeru Ohmori, offering a fascinating glimpse behind the development process for the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia.

Ohmori shared how this ambitious project began not as a massive undertaking, but as a focused creative spark. Development kicked off shortly after the highly successful Scarlet and Violet games were completed. Initially, the core team was incredibly small—just Ohmori himself and two programmers tackling the initial vision.

As the concept matured, so did the scope of the project. The group soon expanded, growing from three to five dedicated members bringing their skills to bear on the development. Even in these early prototyping stages, the unique mechanics of Pokopia were already being sketched out with some truly imaginative ideas.

One of the earliest concepts that emerged involved a playful environmental mechanic: the idea of planting grass as a mechanism for spawning various types of Pokémon. This introduced an organic and living element to the gameplay, suggesting a world where evolution happens naturally through cultivation.

Adding another layer of delightful randomness, the team also locked in a unique narrative choice early on: the concept of Ditto taking center stage as the protagonist. This decision hinted at a story that might be less about traditional battling and more about transformation and adaptation.

These initial creative decisions demonstrate how Pokopia was built—starting with small, focused ideas and allowing them to expand into a rich, detailed world brimming with unique Pokémon experiences.
