Gears of War boss says next game won’t take nearly as long
The gaming industry is currently navigating a volatile landscape, with massive corporate shifts sending ripples across the entire business. At the heart of this change, developers and studios are grappling with uncertainty, particularly as major players like Xbox undergo significant restructuring.
The Coalition, the developer behind the acclaimed Gears of War franchise, was not immune to this corporate turbulence. Reports surfaced regarding serious internal concern among staff that job security might be threatened following the release of Gears of War: E-Day, amidst the ongoing layoffs at Xbox.
The mood within the studio was described as cautious. One source indicated a desire to wait until the game’s launch had passed before celebrating, suggesting an underlying anxiety about the future, whether it involved further cuts or organizational changes under parent companies like Activision.
This corporate realignment is sweeping across the industry. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s strategic “reset” of the gaming business has already resulted in thousands of job cuts this financial year, demonstrating the seismic shift occurring in the market. This restructuring has led to notable studio mergers, with entities like Rare (developer of Halo and Sea of Thieves) and Obsidian (developer of Grounded) being reorganized under larger umbrellas such as Activision and Bethesda.
Despite these industry-wide challenges, The Coalition has largely managed to hold the line. While the studio experienced some internal worry, leadership focused intently on what they could control: the quality of their work.
Studio head Mike Crump addressed these concerns, emphasizing the team’s mission. “What I say to myself, what I say to the team, is we need to focus on the things that we can control,” he stated. He affirmed that their priority remained shipping a game that players would genuinely love, a goal he felt the team had successfully achieved.
Looking forward, the Coalition is clearly focused on the future of the Gears of War universe. Crump suggested that E-Day served as a powerful foundation for future projects, signaling ambitious plans to expand the franchise.
He hinted that the next installment in the series will be significantly more attainable, noting that “the next game will not take nearly as long” to develop. This promise suggests a determined push to continue telling the story that the Gears franchise began, aiming to wrap up the narrative threads left by Gears 4 and 5.
The focus now turns to the future of Gears, with the development team determined to build upon the success of E-Day and ensure that the next chapter in the Gears of War saga is not only engaging but also achievable.
