God of War Laufey release date set for February
The wait for an epic new adventure just got officially scheduled. Following an exciting reveal, PlayStation has set a concrete launch date for God of War Laufey: February 16, 2027.
This announcement came from Sony Santa Monica creative head Cory Barlog during a recent San Diego Comic-Con panel, followed by a brief yet golden glimpse of the game’s logo shared across PlayStation’s social media channels. While fans can now add the title to their wishlists on the PlayStation Store, details regarding pre-orders and pricing are still forthcoming.
But what makes this new installment so intriguing is its focus on a radically different narrative structure. For those unfamiliar with the series, God of War Laufey sets aside Kratos and delves into the world of Faye—the wife Kratos lost before the events of God of War 2018 began. Players will follow Faye as she journeys through the afterlife of the gods, an exploration that promises deep emotional resonance.
The core gameplay shifts significantly from the action-heavy combat of previous titles. Instead of focusing solely on the titular god-killer, players will experience a journey driven by Faye’s quest, potentially leading her to encounter the very deities Kratos once mercilessly butchered—a dynamic that promises some truly awkward and unexpected interactions.
The combat system is also undergoing an evolution. PlayStation has debuted previews showing the game’s epic opening, highlighting how the series combat is set to evolve from spectacular aerial maneuvers to brutal, impactful strikes designed to send foes flying out of the arena.
Despite Sony’s plans to move away from physical disc production in the following year, Santa Monica has confirmed that God of War Laufey will still launch on a proper disc, ensuring fans get a tangible piece of this legendary experience rather than just a code-in-box release.
February 2027 is shaping up to be an exceptionally crowded month for video game releases. God of War Laufey joins a lineup of anticipated blockbusters, including Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 12), Persona 4 Revival (February 18), and the highly anticipated reboot of Fable (February 23).
Meanwhile, the development engine continues to churn. Sony Santa Monica is also reportedly working on a Kratos-focused game that will explore his story in a different light, broadening the scope of the franchise.
