GTA 6 devs researched Florida life at strip clubs and the beach
Game development is notoriously demanding, often requiring developers to spend countless hours pouring their creative energy into a craft that is frequently met with minimal recognition before the next round of mass layoffs. Yet, when it comes to Rockstar Games, their approach to world-building takes an unexpectedly adventurous turn.
For the upcoming GTA 6, the development team undertook extensive research trips, and their focus was squarely on the vibrant, often raucous landscapes of Florida. Rather than simply sketching out fictional locations, the team sought to genuinely experience the environments that would define Leonida and Vice City.
Senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, revealed that the team sought to soak up the culture of the regions they were recreating. “We go and try to experience everything,” Humphries shared, noting that their research spanned everything from riding around at night with ex-cops to visiting strip clubs, nightclubs, beaches, the Everglades, and the Keys.
This wasn’t just a casual sightseeing tour; it was deep immersion. The goal was to understand the “vibes” of these places to bring authenticity to the narrative. Humphries explained that the story thrives in an environment where the stark contrast between rich and poor exists side by side, bound together by the inescapable threads of crime and corruption.
While many studios conduct research trips, the focus on Florida’s notorious nightlife and coastal scenery makes Rockstar’s journey particularly evocative. The real-life inspirations for Leonida and Vice City are not just places, but hubs of high-energy, complex social dynamics.
Although the team has spent time exploring these glamorous locations, they emphasize that the story will take players far beyond the beaches and nightlife. The narrative promises to drag Jason and Lucia through diverse environments, allowing players to explore rich and poor communities existing side by side, connecting them through the universal themes of crime and social stratification.
The result is a world built not just of concrete and neon, but of real, lived experiences, ensuring that the fictional landscapes of the game are rich, layered, and deeply connected to the energy of their inspirations.
