Hello Games celebrates 10 years of No Man’s Sky
Ten years ago, on August 9th, 2016, something extraordinary happened across the cosmos. PlayStation Travellers embarked on their first voyage into the unknown, setting foot on a brand new alien planet in No Man’s Sky.
The journey began with simple words echoing through the helmet: “Hazard protection active.” This moment wasn’t just the start of a game; it was the genesis of an unexplored universe, born from the collective will of players who took their first steps into an infinite expanse.
Since that initial launch, millions of players have joined this cosmic exploration. They haven’t just visited planets; they have woven a civilization across light-years, building sprawling bases, nurturing vibrant communities, and crafting custom ships that defy imagination—some looking like whimsical characters from Spongebob Squarepants, others majestic Cathedrals of light.
The No Man’s Sky universe has continuously evolved over the last decade. With forty major updates, all free to play, the sandbox has expanded dramatically, introducing complex features such as base-building, exocraft navigation, settlement management, mechs, pets, living ships, and grand expeditions. The universe itself has been rebuilt and deepened repeatedly.
The immersion factor has only grown further through technological advancements. PlayStation introduced support for PSVR, then the PS5, and most recently the PSVR2, allowing players to experience this cosmic adventure in vastly deeper and more immersive ways.
This shared journey has resulted in an astonishing level of engagement. Voyagers released last year saw more active players than the game had achieved since its launch. Despite this massive activity, players have explored less than 1 percent of all the planets in No Man’s Sky, leaving countless uncharted mysteries waiting to be discovered.
The scale of what has been achieved is staggering. The universe is now more vibrant and alive than ever before, filled with player-made narratives and discoveries. While the core journey continues, a small team behind the project remains focused on the next grand chapter. Cooking up new worlds like Light No Fire, the future of No Man’s Sky remains bright and full of untold possibilities.
