Ubisoft has thrown a fascinating glimpse into the future of classic strategy games, revealing a remake of 1999’s Heroes of Might and Magic 3 at Gamescom. But this isn’t just a cosmetic facelift; the trailer suggests a complete reimagining, promising to elevate the beloved classic from its isometric roots into a modern, immersive 3D experience set for release in 2027 across console and PC.

The transformation involves shifting the game world from its familiar 2D perspective to a dynamic 3D environment, complete with dynamic weather and seasons. To achieve this leap, the team made a crucial decision: preserve the core gameplay. Creative Director Jean-Felix Monin emphasized that the fundamental systems and balancing of the original game were considered a masterpiece, and the remake is dedicated to honoring that legacy.

To navigate such a massive visual and structural overhaul, the development team engaged directly with the dedicated fanbase. They consulted with key community members and experts, ensuring that any changes served the game’s spirit rather than altering its substance. This collaborative approach helped guide the transition from the old style to the new, ensuring the heart of the gameplay remained intact.

The focus then shifted to enhancing the player experience. While the mechanics were locked down, the team injected new content to address the needs of modern players. This included introducing a fresh prologue campaign and cinematic storytelling designed to pull players into the world seamlessly.

One of the main drivers for the new prologue was the need for a better introduction. Monin explained that the original game threw players directly into the action, leaving many new players without a comprehensive tutorial. The new campaign serves to teach newcomers the ropes, easing them into the narrative and gameplay at the same time.

Furthermore, the new content was intended to resolve some narrative loose ends regarding the events leading up to Catherine’s journey to Erathia and Antagarich, offering a cohesive story that binds the world together. The goal, as Monin put it, was to connect with the deep nostalgia of long-time fans while simultaneously inviting new generations to discover the magic.

The original game was already highly acclaimed upon release, earning a score of 9 on IGN, which praised it as a triumphant return for the series. Ubisoft’s vision for the remake is to harness that nostalgic feeling to attract new players, offering a modernized window into a legendary strategy game.
