“No one puts Double Fine out of business except for me,” Schafer explained. Yet, amidst the soul-sucking negotiations, he found a powerful surge of energy within the team.
The defining victory for Double Fine was ensuring the continuation of its intellectual property. The studio successfully retained ownership of all its games and publishing rights, carving out a path to full independence despite the corporate maneuvering. While the transition required some difficult changes, the core creative engine remained intact.
This shift didn’t halt development; it fueled it. The team channeled the stress into a renewed focus, successfully finding a creative spark that invigorated both Schafer and the remaining staff. The focus pivoted quickly toward the next great adventure, evidenced by their recent Kickstarter for upcoming projects.
The next venture, Brutal Legend 2, is ambitious, with the team aiming for a goal that, if achieved, would be truly legendary. This demonstrates that even amid corporate turbulence, the desire to create groundbreaking experiences remains fiercely alive.
