Ikeda and Harada reunite at VS Studio
The fighting game world is buzzing with creative shifts, and a major piece of that dynamic is the recent arrival of former legend Kohei Ikeda to a newly formed development house. Ikeda has joined VS Studio, the Tokyo-based, SNK-owned outfit established by Katsuhiro Harada, marking an exciting reunion for those who shaped the genre.
Ikeda’s move isn’t just a career step; it’s a journey back to the roots of his craft. In his comments, he expressed a deep sense of fulfillment, noting that working with two of his former bosses brings a potent mix of nostalgia and thrilling anticipation. “Working on games again with two of my former bosses feels nostalgic in many ways, while at the same time, the excitement of creating something completely new makes every day incredibly fulfilling,” he shared about the opportunity.
This convergence of talent stems from a rich history within the industry. Ikeda is best known for his pivotal work as the director for the acclaimed Tekken series, culminating in his direction of both Tekken 7 and Tekken 8. His departure from Namco Bandai in June followed a period of intense creative output that defined a generation of 3D fighting games.
The foundation for this new venture was laid by Harada, who subsequently established VS Studio following his own departure from Namco Bandai after over three decades with the company. The studio, now backed by SNK, represents a powerful combination of legacy and future vision, built on the foundation of those who understand the DNA of competitive gameplay.
While the future projects of VS Studio are yet to be fully unveiled, the talent assembled suggests an abundance of fighting game expertise. The combination of established direction and fresh creative energy promises a compelling outlook for the titles that will emerge from this collaborative space.
