Kingdom Hearts complicated FF10 dev team with JRPG legends
The creation of a masterpiece like Final Fantasy 10 is often viewed as a singular act of genius, but behind the epic scope of the game lies a fascinating tale of creative juggling and logistical tightropes. As producer Yoshinori Kitase reflects on the development process for the JRPG, it turns out assembling the core team was trickier than anyone might imagine—primarily due to the demands of another massive project: Kingdom Hearts 1.
The complexity stemmed from overlapping timelines. Tetsuya Nomura, a titan of character design known for his work on titles like Final Fantasy 7 and 8, found himself simultaneously steering the development of Kingdom Hearts. While Nomura contributed as a character designer to Final Fantasy 10, his primary focus was dedicated elsewhere. This meant that when it came time to build the world of FF10, the team needed strong leadership for the technical visual elements.
This scheduling conflict created a unique challenge for the team. Kitase noted that the initial priority was finding skilled individuals who could lead the charge on crucial 3D elements—everything from motion graphics and backgrounds to character models. Instead of starting from scratch, the team managed this by promoting existing talent. They brought together veterans with deep experience from previous Final Fantasy titles, ensuring a foundation built on proven creative prowess.
Even with these new additions, the core strength remained intact. Kitase pointed to figures like Yusuke Naora, who had already made his mark across multiple Final Fantasy games including 3, 7, and 8, providing invaluable experience and support for the entire endeavor.
Today, Nomura continues to demonstrate that creative demands don’t slow down. He remains a busy force in the industry, currently splitting his time between the ongoing world of Kingdom Hearts and continued involvement with the Final Fantasy franchise, including his role as a creative director on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation.
