When it comes to stepping into the world of superhero cinema, every experience comes with a lesson. For actor Christopher Abbott, his recent journey in the Marvel universe has been less a smooth ride and more a spirited learning curve.

Abbott recently reflected on his time portraying The Foreigner in the 2024 Spider-Man spin-off, Happy Sad Confused. He admitted that navigating the role was more about discovery than immediate understanding. When discussing the character’s abilities, which involved hypnosis, Abbott confessed that he didn’t fully grasp the superpowers or what was unfolding around him.

“I didn’t understand what the superpower was; I didn’t know what was going on. I take off my glasses? What happens? I feel like no one really had a good answer,” he shared, noting that he felt a sense of uncertainty during the performance.

Beyond the specifics of the character, Abbott pointed to the broader experience, adding that he felt a lack of clarity in the moment, leading him to conclude that he had to dig deeper. He described the process as navigating an unknown territory, acknowledging, “I don’t know what I was wearing in that thing. I’ve sort of buried that deep… it’s a learning curve.”

While the film itself generated only $60 million at the worldwide box office, Abbott’s focus remains firmly forward. He is now pivoting toward a project that promises much brighter horizons: the X-Men franchise.

In this new venture, Abbott will portray the iconic Professor Xavier. However, his anticipation for this casting was tempered by the experience of the previous cinematic reveal. He felt the D23 casting for the X-Men group, alongside the rest of the cast, felt a bit underwhelming, stating that he initially felt his energy shift when he realized many people did not yet know who he was.

Despite the initial stumble, Abbott is ready for the next chapter. The upcoming X-Men film is scheduled to hit cinemas on May 5, 2028, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting evolution for the superhero genre.
