Ubisoft has once again thrown a fascinating piece of history into the digital arena, hinting at a new installment of the Assassin’s Creed saga set deep within ancient China. This upcoming title, tentatively titled Assassin’s Creed Destiny, promises a massive open world and a unique combat mechanic centered around a stylish umbrella weapon.

The setting for Destiny is anchored in a pivotal historical period: 206 BCE, a time when the brutal civil war between the Qin and Han dynasties was settling into a new order. The narrative appears poised to explore the dramatic rise of figures like Liu Bang as the central focus for players.

The development of Destiny suggests a significant collaboration, reportedly between Ubisoft and Tencent, the massive Chinese conglomerate that holds substantial influence over the gaming industry. This partnership aims to bring a unique cultural blend to the franchise.

Sneak peeks of the game reveal innovative gameplay concepts. Prototype footage shows a hooded assassin engaged in a siege against a warlord like Xiang Yu, immediately setting a high-stakes tone. Furthermore, the combat system introduces unique elements, including the use of a spinning umbrella weapon, hinting at a distinct fighting style.

Beyond the combat, the design philosophy seems deeply rooted in the setting. Development snippets suggest players might have the choice between male and female protagonists, or perhaps even dual-protagonist mechanics. The user interface itself is rumored to incorporate cultural aesthetics, utilizing Yin-yangs and ink brushes to tie the experience directly into the ancient Chinese environment.

While the vision for Destiny was unfolding, other projects within the franchise have navigated their own development waters. Assassin’s Creed Jade remains in active development, though reports suggest it may be facing some delays, potentially pushing its release into 2025. This highlights the complex challenges inherent in bringing large-scale open-world games to fruition.

Meanwhile, the focus shifts to the next major entry, Assassin’s Creed Hexe. This project has experienced its own creative turbulence. Reports indicate that developers made significant changes, reportedly removing the magical abilities that were previously part of the game’s design, signaling a major rework of the core mechanics.

The leadership behind Hexe has also seen some movement, with the departure of game director Benoit Richer following the exit of creative director Clint Hocking. This transition has triggered a substantial reshuffle at the top of the franchise, with Ubisoft veteran Jean Guesdon taking the helm as Assassin’s Creed Head of Content, steering the future direction of the series.
