Life After Nintendo: A WarioWare Director’s Challenge
The world of gaming is constantly evolving, but sometimes, the greatest leaps happen when legends choose a new path. Recently, that shift was announced by Goro Abe, a veteran of Nintendo and a celebrated figure in the WarioWare franchise.
After a long and impactful career at Nintendo, Abe made the decision to step away from the company to pursue a new adventure in academia. He has taken up a teaching post at the Osaka Electro-Communication University, trading the high-speed world of game development for the intellectual pursuit of teaching.
This transition is more than just a change of scenery; it reflects a desire for personal challenge. When asked about his decision, Abe reflected on the immense time commitment required in game creation. He felt that based on his age and career stage, he had reached a point where he wished to explore different avenues and pursue experiences he had not yet had the chance to explore.
“Making games takes a lot of time,” Abe shared. “I knew that based on my age and career that I could not make that many more games in the future. I wanted to challenge myself to do other stuff, and that’s why I decided to go into teaching.”
Stepping into the classroom allows for a new kind of creation—one focused on nurturing knowledge and inspiring the next generation, rather than simply designing the next hit game. Abe’s move signals a fascinating pivot, demonstrating that even titans of the gaming industry are always ready for a fresh start and a deeper intellectual challenge.
