In a galaxy overflowing with new content, it’s tough when some brilliant concepts get to sit on the shelf. While the Star Wars universe is constantly buzzing with new development, one particular, ambitious action-RPG project remains a tantalizing ghost: Magellan.

This project aimed to dive deep into the lore, offering players the chance to step into the boots of a legendary figure—be it a Jedi wielding the Force lightsaber or a Mandalorian mastering jetpacks and weaponry. It was a true AAA vision, designed to bring the epic scope of Star Wars into a modern, action-packed role-playing experience.

Development of Magellan began under the codename, focusing on a third-person ARPG style that promised engaging shoot-and-loot mechanics. The core concept centered on dual classes: the mystical Jedi, masters of the Force, and the rugged Mandalorians, equipped with flamethrowers and high-speed mobility.

Beyond the combat, the game was planned to feature unique systems designed to deepen player immersion. Players would hunt for “Booster Gear” from enemies and unlock rewards through chests, while an “NPC Bond System” allowed relationships with companions to grow, adding a layer of narrative depth separate from the main conflict with Stormtroopers and droids.

The ambitious project, which was slated for release across major platforms like PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, ultimately faced an untimely halt. The core development studio, Echtra Games, was shut down by its owner, Zynga, leaving the fate of Magellan hanging in the balance.

Even as Magellan sought a place among the grand catalog of Star Wars games, the franchise continued to deliver exciting installments. The anticipation for new content is being met with exciting releases this year, including the XCOM-like Zero Company and Star Wars: Galactic Racer. Furthermore, the wider Star Wars universe continues to offer fresh revelations, with D23 bringing exciting updates on Ahsoka’s next season, the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter movie starring Ryan Gosling, and the standalone spinoff, The Ninth Jedi.
