Marathon leaves Bungie in turmoil
A significant shift is underway at Bungie as game director Joe Ziegler prepares for a new adventure outside of the studio. The transition comes at a time when the creative force behind Marathon is stepping into a new chapter, ensuring that the dark and terrifying space survival frontier continues its exciting mission.
Ziegler announced his departure in a note, revealing that the helm of Marathon will be shared by Del Chafe III, who previously served as the assistant game director. He will be working alongside creative director Julia Nardin to guide the project into its next phase.
“Both of them have been operating in a strong leadership capacity for the team and are ready to guide Marathon into the next chapter with an even better and brighter future,” Ziegler expressed, emphasizing his pride in the new pairing. He expressed excitement about seeing them steer the future of the world they have built together.
While Ziegler heads off to a new opportunity somewhere else, he took a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bungie and the community for supporting his journey in bringing Marathon to life. He affirmed that the mission itself will continue in new and surprising ways, promising continued excitement for what the team has planned next.
The tenure of game directing at Marathon has seen changes. Previously, Christopher Barrett held the role until his departure, which followed allegations of misconduct. Following these events, Barrett settled his case with Bungie and Sony.
Ziegler joined Bungie in late 2022, following a successful twelve-year career at Riot Games. His move occurs amidst recent restructuring within the studio, as Bungie enacted a round of layoffs in June that affected teams working on both Destiny and Marathon.
