Mick Gordon will return to the Doom series In a Heartbeat
The sound of a headbang has defined a generation of gaming, and at the heart of that auditory experience is Mick Gordon, the legendary composer behind the iconic soundscapes of Doom and Doom Eternal. Despite a public falling-out with the development team, Gordon remains firmly positioned at the center of the action, exploring whether his involvement in id Software’s legendary shooter series has a future.
When pressed about the possibility of contributing to future installments in id Software’s shooter franchise, Gordon offered a candid, almost philosophical response. He suggested that any future involvement would hinge on specific internal dynamics, stating that a set of unfortunate events would need to align perfectly before he would consider jumping back into the fray. “There are a lot of dominoes that would have to fall in a very specific way for that to occur,” he commented. “If those dominoes ever fell in that way, I would. Of course. Within a heartbeat.”
While the details of these internal disputes remain private, the history surrounding the soundtrack contributions is complex. In 2022, Gordon had voiced concerns about unpaid compensation and treatment from executive producer Marty Stratton, highlighting a challenging experience during the creation of the monumental score. Yet, this history does not diminish his enduring passion for the Doom universe. Gordon emphasized that he still harbored a deep desire to explore the creative possibilities of the series, noting that he had a wealth of ideas for where the franchise could go.
The fate of id Software itself has also been a story of corporate upheaval, dealing with massive shifts in the gaming industry, particularly Microsoft’s strategic changes. At the time, the development team experienced significant changes, facing staff reductions that forced them to grapple with making AAA games under duress. Regardless of these external pressures, Gordon has remained creatively productive, continually finding new avenues to express his genius.
Currently, Gordon is channeling his formidable talent into exciting new projects. He recently contributed the theme music for the final boss fight in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2, set for release in October. Furthermore, he is actively producing the entire soundtrack for Defect, a squad-based cyberpunk shooter developed by veterans of the Doom and Call of Duty series.
Looking ahead, Gordon is set to bring the music of his iconic work to a massive live audience. In 2027, he will perform the music he composed for Doom and Doom Eternal with a full live band at the UK’s RADAR music festival, offering fans a chance to experience the score in a breathtaking, live setting.
