The digital realm is no longer enough for gaming giants. Xbox is officially pivoting its focus, formalizing a massive strategy to extend its celebrated video game franchises into the tangible world of film, television, and, most excitingly, theme parks.

To execute this ambitious vision, Xbox has launched a brand new division: XP. This initiative is designed to bridge the gap between interactive entertainment and real-world experiences, establishing a pathway for gaming IPs to populate physical spaces.

The theme park ambitions are already underway. This strategy is driven by a belief that gaming IP holds incredible potential for experiential engagement. As the Xbox Chief Strategy Officer has noted, the plan for a Minecraft theme park initiative is just the first of many potential placements coming down the pipeline.

This approach echoes the highly successful model set by competitors. Just as Nintendo brought beloved franchises like Mario and Donkey Kong to Universal Studios parks in the US and Japan, Xbox is looking to integrate its intellectual property into existing entertainment landscapes rather than building entirely new, standalone parks.

This difference is key. There is no immediate plan for a dedicated, standalone Xbox theme park. Instead, the focus is on strategic theme park placements, allowing Xbox franchises to join existing, immersive environments. This mirrors how Nintendo’s Super Nintendo World attractions exist within the larger Universal Studios parks.

One concrete example of this future is the Minecraft theme park, which is slated to open in the UK next year, situated within Chessington World of Adventures.

The new XP division is structured to handle this expansion across various media formats, encompassing four key sub-divisions: bringing Xbox franchises to film and TV, consumer products, live events, and brand partnerships. This formal structure allows the company to harness the immense power of its IPs across multiple sectors.

Leading this charge is Kayleen Walters, who is steering the XP division. As a former president of Minecraft and a former executive at Lucasfilm, Walters brings a unique blend of experience to this new mandate, ensuring that the fusion of gaming and physical entertainment is executed with vision and precision.
