Monster Hunter Wilds hands-on: Taking down Araketa and Teostra

The world of monster hunting is on the brink of an evolution, thanks to the upcoming expansion Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance. Set to launch on PS5 in 2027, this massive addition promises not just new monsters and areas, but a complete overhaul of the combat experience, introducing dynamic mechanics that push the boundaries of epic beast hunting.

At the recent Tokyo Game Show 2026, developers gave potential players a thrilling glimpse into this future. The hands-on demo provided an opportunity to test out new features, showcasing exhilarating boss fights against formidable foes like the boss variant of Araketa and the Elder Dragon Teostra, all while demonstrating the revolutionary new Boost Action mechanics.

The Momentum Shift: Introducing Boost Action

The centerpiece of the new gameplay is Boost Action, a mechanic designed to let hunters sustain continuous, high-impact attacks. By activating the Boost Bracer, players can unleash weapon-specific attacks and empower certain actions for a limited duration, seamlessly integrating these bursts into existing combos. This means striking mid-combo or immediately after an attack, allowing players to maintain incredible offensive momentum without breaking the flow.

The system is designed for high-level tactical play. The Boost gauge fills with every strike landed, and crucially, destroying wounds with Focus Strike while in the Boost state recharges the gauge. This allows players to execute high-level tactics, such as shattering a wound just before the boost fades, ensuring relentless momentum during intense engagements.

When equipped with the Sword and Shield, Boost Action delivers lightning-fast mobility, allowing hunters to close gaps, dive into monster guards, and unleash devastating boosted combos. It acts as an exhilarating dodge mechanic, instantly pivoting the player around to the target’s flank. It’s pure, high-speed combat.

Exploring Skybound Eyrie: Hunting in the Clouds

Beyond new combat mechanics, the demo plunged players into breathtaking new environments. The quest to hunt the Araketa pack took place in the stunning Skybound Eyrie area, a realm of floating islands where players could utilize their Seikret to catch updrafts and seamlessly glide between floating landmasses, framed by towering ruins against a crystal-clear sky.

The hunt for the Araketa pack presented a unique challenge. The monster pack coordinated relentlessly, utilizing synchronized charges and aerial attacks. Mastering this dynamic assault required precision, forcing hunters to coordinate against multiple beasts simultaneously. Incorporating dynamic elements, like using creatures such as Gundoraja to launch attacks, added fantastic flair to the pursuit.

Facing the Dragon: New Attacks in the Oilwell Basin

The ultimate test of skill came in the Oilwell Basin, where players confronted the massive Elder Dragon Teostra. While the fight featured familiar elements like charges and flame breath, the demo introduced entirely new attack patterns that provided a fresh level of challenge.

Teostra’s attacks are terrifyingly effective. One particularly striking maneuver involves the dragon rearing up and slamming both forelegs down with crushing force. Mastering the timing to counter this heavy slam with maneuvers like the Switch Axe Offset Rising Slash allows players to deflect the blow, turning a horrifying visual into a rewarding tactical advantage.

The environment itself proved to be an enemy; thick oil mud and scattered dust continuously sabotaged movement, robbing players of precious seconds needed to dodge. Yet, by effectively leveraging Focus Mode, wound destruction, and the recently introduced Boost Actions, players managed to trade blows effectively and ultimately achieve a dramatic, nail-biting conclusion against the dragon.

This short taste of Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance confirms that the game is set to redefine monster hunting. With breathtaking new locales, formidable beasts, and revolutionary combat depth, the evolution of monster hunting is about to become spectacular.
