Even the most celebrated figures in the comic book world aren’t immune to judging the cinematic output, and this is exactly what Comics legend Grant Morrison has been doing lately. While Morrison is known for voicing strong opinions on superhero projects, his latest take on the recent Supergirl film certainly raised some eyebrows regarding its box office performance and narrative coherence.

Writing on his Substack, Morrison offered his assessment of the cosmic adventure starring Milly Alcock. While acknowledging that the film wasn’t entirely bad, he found significant fault in key performances and structural choices. He singled out Milly Alcock as delivering the most moving and credible work, but his attention quickly turned to other aspects of the production.

The critique didn’t stop there. Morrison was particularly dismissive of Jason Momoa’s portrayal of the villain Lobo. He described the performance as one of the worst he had seen in a film, suggesting that the character seemed ill-suited to the actor. “Lobo seems like a character made for him to play,” Morrison wrote, highlighting a baffling disconnect between the actor and the role.

Beyond the acting, Morrison pointed out a significant plot hole that undermined the second act of the movie. He argued that the necessity of chasing down the antidote for the Romanian gangster was rendered illogical. The narrative suffered from a fundamental flaw: if Supergirl simply brought Krypto with her to the yellow sun world, the sun’s rays would have made the dog invulnerable, easily negating any toxin. This rendered the entire pursuit of the antidote superfluous.

Despite these critiques, the broader DC Universe seems to be shaking off any lingering bad taste quickly. The cinematic landscape is evolving, proving that the franchise has plenty of compelling material to work with.

While some projects have faced hurdles, other titles are showing significant promise. The HBO series Lanterns is building momentum toward its finale, and the body horror film Clayface is poised to surprise audiences with its success this October.

Looking ahead, the DCU is gearing up for what many consider its biggest chapter yet. The upcoming film Man of Tomorrow promises a dynamic ensemble, featuring David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and a strong lineup of other iconic heroes like Supergirl and John Stewart.

With exciting new storylines and compelling performances on the horizon, it seems the future of the DC cinematic universe is set to be far more spectacular than the cautionary tale of a single movie might suggest.
