NMS Cosmos Update: Reach the Stars in Space

Hello Games has just celebrated a milestone in the cosmos, delivering the tenth-anniversary patch, Cosmos, to transform the vast, empty void of space into a dynamic, living realm. Chief Sean Murray, the developer, described this update as one of the most ambitious changes in the game’s history, not just adding content, but fundamentally redefining what it means to explore the universe.

For years, No Man’s Sky has been defined as a Space Game, yet space remained largely an empty backdrop. With Cosmos, Hello Games tackled the challenge of making space feel truly alive—a place where players could build, ally, and claim territory. The central vision was to move beyond simple exploration and allow players to experience space as a true, interconnected home.

The update introduces a breathtaking array of new features designed to foster this sense of ownership. Players can now navigate a dynamic Star Map, revealing new points of interest that unlock diverse missions and exploration routes across the galaxy. Scattered throughout this newly vibrant space are massive space hulks, immense bio-wrecks, and beautiful asteroid belts brimming with valuable crystal resources.

But the real revolution lies in the new infrastructure. Players can now establish free-floating orbital bases anywhere in the void, allowing for limitless architectural freedom. These orbital stations aren’t just static locations; they are modular hubs where players can establish truck stops, orbital restaurants, or military outposts.

The most requested features are finally here: players can purchase and customize their own Space Stations. These stations become personalized clubhouses, allowing players to decorate them internally and externally, creating a unique social hub for them and their friends.

This sense of ownership naturally led to the introduction of Alliances. The Space Station framework provides the perfect nexus for forming societies, allowing players to gather, cooperate, and build a networked empire across the stars, competing for the most prominent and richest alliances.

Further enhancing the journey is the possibility to truly connect with the cosmos. Players can now undertake the perilous mission to reach the very center of their own star system, connecting them directly with the sun at the heart of their home.

The update also includes new ways to interact with the environment, such as engaging with alien lifeforms via new space outposts, and careful navigation around bio-wrecks that require careful reclamation due to biological hazards. The update culminates in an expedition, Our Journey Continues!, which acts as a museum, unlocking the history and fascinating commentary behind every major update since the game’s launch.

Patch notes for the update include the introduction of the Star Map, space hulks, outposts, bio-wrecks, asteroid belts, orbital bases, space station ownership, alliances, and the ability to reach stars.
